How to dispute an error on your credit report
Errors on a credit report, like accounts that are not yours, wrong balances, or late payments you did not make, can cost you money. The Fair Credit Reporting Act gives you the right to dispute them, and the process is free.
1. Get your free credit reports
Request your reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion at AnnualCreditReport.com, the official free source. Check each one, since errors may appear on only one report.
2. Identify each error
Look for accounts you did not open, wrong balances or limits, incorrect late payments, accounts listed more than once, closed accounts reported as open, and wrong personal information. Gather documents that prove the correct information.
3. Dispute with the credit reporting company
Send a dispute to each credit reporting company that shows the error, online or in writing. Per the CFPB, a mailed dispute should include your contact information, each error and its account number, why it is wrong, what you want corrected or removed, a copy of the report with the item marked, and copies (not originals) of your documents. Certified mail with return receipt gives you proof of delivery.
4. Also dispute with the company that reported it
You can send a dispute directly to the furnisher (the lender, card company, or collector that supplied the information). The CFPB says furnishers generally must investigate and respond within 30 days of receiving your dispute.
5. Review the results and follow up
The credit reporting company must investigate, forward your information to the furnisher, and report the results to you. If the item is confirmed as accurate and you still disagree, you can ask that a statement of dispute be added to your file, and you can submit a complaint to the CFPB.
What your letter should include
- Your full name, address, and phone number
- Your report confirmation number, if you have one
- Each disputed item and its account number
- A clear explanation of why each item is wrong
- A request to correct or delete the item
- Copies of your report (item highlighted) and supporting documents
Keep a copy of everything you send, and note the date you sent it.
Frequently asked questions
Does it cost money to dispute a credit report error?
No. Disputing errors with the credit reporting companies and furnishers is free. You do not need to pay a credit repair company to do it.
Should I dispute online or by mail?
Either works. Mail by certified mail gives you a clear record of what you sent and when. Keep copies of everything.
Can I dispute accurate negative information?
A dispute is for information that is inaccurate, incomplete, or cannot be verified. Accurate negative information generally stays on your report for the period allowed by law.
