How to cancel a subscription or gym membership that won’t cancel
Some gyms and subscription services make canceling hard on purpose, with phone-only cancellation, in-person requirements, or “retention” offers. A written cancellation notice gives you proof of the date you canceled.
1. Read the cancellation terms
Find your contract, membership agreement, or the terms of service. Note the cancellation method, any notice period (for example, 30 days), and any fees. Some states have specific rules for gym or health club contracts.
2. Cancel using every method they offer
Try the method the company names first (online, app, phone, or in person) and write down the date, time, and name of anyone you speak to. Take screenshots of online cancellation pages and confirmation emails.
3. Send a written cancellation notice
Send a letter or email stating that you are canceling effective immediately (or at the end of the required notice period), asking them to stop all charges, and requesting written confirmation. Mail it by certified mail with return receipt if the contract requires written notice.
4. Stop future charges at your bank
Ask your bank or card issuer how to stop recurring payments to that merchant. For card charges made after you canceled, you can dispute them with your card issuer, using your cancellation notice as proof. Our billing error guide covers how.
5. File a complaint if they keep charging
If charges continue, file a complaint with your state attorney general or consumer protection office (find yours at USA.gov). If it involves a bank or card, you can also submit a complaint to the CFPB.
What your letter should include
- Your name, address, and member or account number
- A clear statement that you are canceling, and the effective date
- The date of any earlier cancellation attempts
- A request to stop all charges and confirm in writing
- A request to refund any charges made after you canceled
- A note that you will dispute further charges with your bank
Keep a copy of everything you send, and note the date you sent it.
Frequently asked questions
Can a gym require me to cancel in person or by certified mail?
Many contracts include terms like these, and whether they are enforceable depends on your state. Sending written notice by certified mail protects you either way.
Will canceling my card stop the charges?
Not always. Some cards update automatically with merchants. It is better to cancel with the company in writing and ask your bank to block the merchant.
Can I get charges refunded after I canceled?
You can ask the company in writing, and if it refuses, dispute the charges with your card issuer using your cancellation proof.
